SUMMARY:Contributions and Contradictions: Fostering Civil Discourse on America’s Founders
DESCRIPTION:A Virtual Professional Development Program for Educators \nHow should we grapple with the legacies of complex historical figures? Join Sphere Education Initiatives and Civic Spirit for this unique virtual professional learning opportunity. The webinar will take a deep dive into building civil discourse around the Founders\, who embody both profound achievements and troubling flaws. We’ll explore the challenges of avoiding oversimplification\, whether by elevating figures to untouchable pedestals or by dismissing them as wholly illegitimate. \nIn discussion\, we’ll consider the role of historical context in shaping our understanding: Does it help us balance empathy with accountability\, or does it risk excusing harmful actions under the guise of “different times”? We’ll discuss strategies for teaching students to recognize human fallibility in ways that develop their critical thinking and compassion while still holding fast to their values. \nThe event will connect these questions to the present day\, sharing resources and strategies to help educators engage their students. We’ll demonstrate how to establish an open discourse with students to explore how they perceive and judge contemporary leaders\, debates around monuments and institutions\, as well as other social\, political\, and economic challenges. All this will be done with an eye toward helping students search for a meaningful line between human imperfection and actions that demand condemnation. \nThe conversation will equip educators with tools to navigate the complexities of history and its enduring influence on our culture\, values\, and public memory.

SUMMARY:PD (Virtual) - 60 Minute Civics A250: The Constitution as Living Document: Progress or Departure?
DESCRIPTION:Should the Constitution evolve with the times\, or should it be interpreted strictly as the Framers understood it? This session will examine the Framers’ vision of constitutional change\, the modern rise of originalism\, and the implications of these perspectives in today’s Supreme Court decisions. We will connect these themes to We the People Units 4 and 5\, which explore the evolving interpretation of the Constitution and the ongoing debates over its meaning in contemporary America. Together\, we’ll consider how differing approaches to constitutional interpretation shape law\, policy\, and civic life in the 21st century.

Plus\, Governor Pritzker seeks a third term while positioning himself for a presidential promotion two years later. Come learn about the current state of play in these contests and others down the ballot just months before the Illinois Primaries. \nThe stakes could not be higher in Washington\, where Democrats seek a congressional check on the Trump Administration\, or Springfield\, where fiscal constraints continue to challenge state lawmakers. SUMMARY:PD (Virtual) - 60 Minute Civics A250 Majority Rule vs. Minority Rights: Madison’s Warning Revisited
DESCRIPTION:James Madison warned that the greatest threat to liberty might come not from government power\, but from majorities oppressing minorities. This session will explore how the Bill of Rights was designed to safeguard against that danger and how these protections connect to We the People Unit 2’s focus on the creation of the Constitution and the principles that guide our government. We’ll examine how current debates over voting rights\, religious freedom\, free speech\, and LGBTQ+ protections continue to test the balance between popular will and individual liberty\, and what this tension means for a diverse\, democratic society.

SUMMARY:PD (Virtual) - Media Literacy\, Online Well-Being\, and the Health of our Communities & Democracy
DESCRIPTION:In our media-filled world\, young people have constant exposure and access to information through phones\, TVs\, radios\, computers\, as well as in printed content. The media landscape is impacting young people\, our communities\, and the health of our democracy. Given this\, how do we support the online well-being of young people and navigate the impacts on our communities and democracy?\n\n\n\nIn this webinar\, we will facilitate a rich conversation between a scholar\, a curriculum writer\, and a Facing History teacher about how to help students understand the fundamental concepts and skills related to media literacy. Dr. Carrie James\, the co-director of Project Zero and the Center for Digital Thriving\, will share about her work focused on young people’s digital experiences\, including opportunities and challenges for their well-being\, social connections\, and civic lives. Dr. James will discuss what she and her colleagues have learned from talking to young people for over a decade about their experiences in online spaces. She will also explain mindshifts that educators can consider to help them coach young people through the opportunities and challenges of our media landscape. \nJulie Halterman\, a senior curriculum developer at Facing History & Ourselves\, will share about the newly published unit Media Literacy for Critical Thinking and Democracy. The unit she developed helps students learn what mass media is\, practice analyzing pieces of media content\, explore ways information can be false or manipulative\, and consider the connections between media literacy skills and the strength of democracies. The Facing History teacher joining us will share about their experiences integrating media literacy in their classroom. We will also discuss the ways that the media landscape is impacting the health of our democracy and how we can help cultivate a more media-literate population that can shape the world for the better. \nFormat: This is a Zoom webinar with live captioning. You’ll be able to participate using the chat\, but will remain off camera. \nFacing History is committed to creating and maintaining a welcoming and inclusive educational environment for educators of all abilities. SUMMARY:Webinar: We Can Teach Hard Things\, Like Civil Rights
DESCRIPTION:The growing political divide in our communities has made conversations about civil rights feel especially complex—and at times daunting—for educators. Yet civil rights are foundational to understanding our democracy and our shared civic responsibilities. Students deserve opportunities to explore how the United States has defined\, expanded\, challenged\, and debated civil rights from the nation’s founding to the present day. \nIn this edWebinar\, iCivics will invite educators to engage in a thoughtful\, practical discussion about teaching civil rights across U.S. history. This session goes beyond a single era or movement\, examining how civil rights have been addressed through the Constitution\, landmark amendments\, court cases\, legislation\, and ongoing civic debates. Together\, we’ll explore how questions of rights\, liberty\, and plurality have evolved\, and why those conversations still matter in classrooms today. \nYou’ll hear from educators working across political\, geographic\, and socioeconomic contexts who are navigating similar challenges and uncertainties. Learn strategies for fostering civil dialogue\, grounding instruction in historical evidence\, and helping students grapple with complex issues. Leave with classroom-ready tools\, renewed confidence\, and the reassurance that you are not alone in teaching these essential civic concepts. This edWebinar will be of interest to K-12 teachers\, librarians\, school leaders\, and district leaders. \nAbout the Presenters\nShari Conditt is a 26-year teaching veteran\, serving as a Social Studies Teacher and Instructional Coach at Woodland High School in Woodland\, Washington.
