SUMMARY:WI Braver Angels Statewide Debate: School Choice
DESCRIPTION:In 1990\, the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program became the nation’s first modern school choice program. Since then\, school choice initiatives have developed and expanded in Wisconsin\, and families across the Dairy State continue to debate their efficacy. In this debate (just as the school year is getting underway!)\, we’re diving in–freely\, fully\, and without fear–to these debates around school choice in Wisconsin. \nHave Wisconsin’s school choice programs been good for families? Students? Schools? Do voucher programs improve student outcomes? Should school choice be expanded in Wisconsin K12 education? We want to know what you think. Bring your arguments\, your curiosities\, and your personal stories to this Braver Angels Debate. \nHere’s the night’s topic: School Choice. Our resolution? \nResolved: K-12 school choice is good for Wisconsin communities. \nJoin the Wisconsin Braver Angels team Wednesday\, September 24\, 2025 over Zoom for our second statewide debate! Listen to speeches for or against the resolution—and then share your own\, if you feel so moved. (And there’s no pressure\, but we hope you will!)

SUMMARY:Workshop - WI Act 266 Teach AAPI Studies K-12
DESCRIPTION:This workshop provides an overview of The Asian American Education Project’s lesson plans and the five thematic units on: citizenship\, civil rights\, identity\, immigration\, and racism. It will cover the importance of including APIDA history in school curricula by exploring the contributions of APIDAs in labor activism\, the fight for school integration and citizenship rights\, the use of the Model Minority Myth as a racial wedge\, how the Perpetual Foreigner Stereotype is part of systemic racism\, and the intersectionality of APIDAs and other minority communities. \nLaura Ouk\, a Cambodian American educator based in Chicago\, was born in Paris after her family fled from the Khmer Rouge regime and later resettled in the U.S. She earned a BA in Educational Studies from Denison University and a MAT in Special Education from Relay Graduate School of Education. With over a decade of experience in K–12 education\, Laura is committed to advancing inclusive practices and supporting first-generation students in accessing postsecondary opportunities. She played a pivotal role in advocating for the TEAACH Act in Illinois. Laura also contributed to the Cambodian American Studies Model Curriculum\, launched in California during the 2024–2025 school year. She currently serves as the Board President of the National Cambodian Heritage Museum and as the Board Vice President for the Cambodian Association of Illinois. \nWCSS and the Asian American EDUcation Project have two awesome presentations coming up to help Wisconsin teachers meet the requirements set out in Act 266 and fill their toolbox with content and methods to teach Asian American Pacific Islander history to students. This is the second of two workshops.

SUMMARY:Civic Learning Week in Wisconsin: learn and share with the story of Roberto Hernández
DESCRIPTION:Civic Learning Week (March 10-14\, 2025) is almost here! PBS Wisconsin Education has tons of great resources to enhance civic learning in classrooms and libraries\, and we’re inviting feedback from educators on one of them in a special Civic Learning Week opportunity. \nWe’re currently looking for Wisconsin educators who work with grades 3-8 and want to explore and share their thoughts on the Wisconsin Biographies story of Roberto Hernández\, a civically-engaged activist who fought for better educational opportunities for Latinos in Milwaukee during the 1960s and 70s. You’ll review the resources and (optionally) share them with learners the first week of March. Then\, during Civic Learning Week\, you’ll connect with our team for a 20-minute “tea time” session to share your feedback and make our media better. Learn more and find the link to sign up in the flyer.

SUMMARY:Social Media and Youth Mental Health: A Civic Learning Week Conversation
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, calls to limit\, regulate\, or ban social media platforms have escalated from all corners of the political spectrum. These concerns have been as varied as national security\, foreign ownership\, and the danger of disinformation in a divided democracy. Yet perhaps the most cross‐partisan concern has come from increasing evidence of social media’s detrimental impact on youth mental health. Join Sphere Education Initiatives on March 10 from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for a timely webinar on social media and youth mental health featuring Jennifer Huddleston\, senior fellow in technology policy at the Cato Institute\, and Clare Morrell\, fellow at the Ethics and Public Policy Center. \nOffered during Civic Learning Week\, which runs March 10–14 this year\, this webinar seeks to highlight “the civic knowledge\, skills\, and dispositions that provide the foundation for an informed and engaged populace.” For more information about Civic Learning Week\, visit civiclearningweek.org. \nThis session will be presented via Zoom.\nAll K–12 educators are eligible to attend.\nEarn 1 hour of professional development for attending.
